The Del, as the hotel is known, was designed by Canadian architect James W. Reid and completed in 1888. It is situated on Coronado Island, near San Diego, and is one of the oldest wooden structures in California. The Del has been featured in several films, including
Some Like It Hot (starring
Marilyn Monroe,
Jack Lemmon, and
Tony Curtis),
The Stunt Man (starring
Peter O'Toole), and the 1990 version of
My Blue Heaven starring
Steve Martin. Today, The Del offers travelers every contemporary convenience in an enchanting Victorian atmosphere, and is considered by many to be one of the best resorts in the world. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977.
