The mission of the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, a non-profit regional
art center, is to enhance the life in our region by promoting the
appreciation, understanding and practice of the Arts. Founded in 1957 by a
group of concerned citizens interested in providing cultural opportunities to
their community, it has grown into a major arts facility in southeastern
Michigan.
Located
at 1516 S. Cranbrook Road on the northwest corner of Fourteen Mile Road in
Birmingham, the BBAC completed the second phase of a four-phase expansion in
the fall of 1997. Architects James Nordlie and David Tryba have won numerous
awards from the Architectural Institute of America for their design of this
facility. The facility is comprised of nine studio/classrooms, four
exhibition/gallery spaces, an "outdoor" classroom area, a glass walled
Commons area, an art library, a Gallery Shop, and administrative offices.
The Art Center, dedicated to teaching the visual arts through active
participation, offers studio classes, workshops, and art history classes to
students from preschool through adult levels. Instructors are prominent
regional artists offering their expertise in fine arts, design, crafts, art
history and aesthetics. Art Camps are offered for children in grades 1-8
during school breaks and throughout the summer. An additional summer
program, Young Artist Interdisciplinary Workshops, for children in middle
school is now offered each August. Interdisciplinary workshops, combining
the visual arts with performing arts and creative writing, create a unique
and exciting opportunity to our middle school students.
A diverse, active exhibition schedule and related programming is offered
including shows by community groups, students and faculty as well as
regional and national artists. Annual juried exhibitions include the
Michigan Fine Arts Competition, a regional high school competition, a
faculty exhibition, a student exhibition entitled Inside the BBAC, and other
specially curated exhibitions.
In partnership with the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber, the Art Center
presents the spring Birmingham Fine Arts Festival in downtown Birmingham on
Mother's Day weekend, including 260 artists, food booths, family art
activities, and musical entertainment. In addition to offering distinctive
gift possibilities, Art Center faculty will share their knowledge and
demonstrate their art at a Family Art Activity Area where everyone can
experience their individual creativity.
The opportunity to purchase high quality fine art and craft is also
available at our Art Center Gallery Shop where works of art by regional and
national artists are offered for sale. A major highlight of the year is the
annual Holiday Shop held in December, offering a wide variety of handcrafted
gift items. A preview party to the Holiday Shop, Shop & Champagne, begins
the ten-day shopping extravaganza with a festive sparkling occasion! The
annual Summer Solstice event, held in mid-June, is the BBAC's largest
fundraiser of the year. Full of excitement, this event includes celebrating
the season with fine food, great wines, an auction and plenty of
entertainment.
Dedicated volunteers work closely with Art Center staff to coordinate many
programs, projects and fund-raising events that reach out to the entire
community. Countless rewarding volunteer hours are involved in this and many
other events at the BBAC. Volunteer opportunities are also offered through
community service, internships, as well as specific projects and events.
The Art Center also offers a program called ARTS (Arts Reaching The Schools)
which enables art educators from public or private institutions to
supplement existing art programs offering portfolio workshops, career days,
teacher in-service workshops as well as private lessons and scouting badge
projects to students.
Membership in the Art Center at various levels allows for further
involvement and participation. Basic membership benefits include early
registration, reduced tuition on classes and inclusion on the BBAC mailing
list.
